Long Hairz

Communities of color throughout the Great Lakes region have been hit hard with toxic pipeline development and infrastructure for oil refinery (Enbridge Lines 3 and 5), and limited access to safe drinking water (Detroit and Flint). Communities are fighting pipelines in an effort to protect drinking water and treaty lands that support access to cultural traditions and lifeways. Artists are raising their voice in support of these communities’ struggles for sovereignty, healing, and self-determination.

In addition to public performances the Long Hairz perform in tribal, charter and other schools with social/environmental justice awareness, inspiring and encouraging youth to express their voices in their communities. They also lecture and perform in colleges and universities addressing environmental and social issues surrounding the pipeline invasion. Audience members connect with the artistic messages and get more information on how to support local organizations that are active in these environmental justice fights.

All of the artists involved have significant experience in environmental justice activism, environmental education, youth organizing and mentoring.
