We find it problematic when the term "Blank Slates" or "Blank Canvas" or "Clean Slate" comes into popular use in describing Detroit or New Orleans' present states post-disaster. Neither city is truly a "Blank Slate" – indeed there are layers upon layers of rich culture and history still present. And most importantly, there are people there.
(NO) Blank Slates: A DET X NOLA Cultural Exchange is a track dedicated to building and exploring the cultural, artistic, economic, developmental and organizing intersections between Detroit, MI and New Orleans, LA. Both cities are presently undergoing perhaps two of the largest scale civic rebuilding and re-development processes of any other modern city in recent history. As such, they are both experiencing fractious outcomes among their people and valuable cultural assets.
This track will explore approaches to rebuilding a city in order to create the most inclusive, sustainable environment possible, rather than a replacement strategy. In essence, there are NO "Blank Slates."
We are seeking session proposal rooted in Detroit and New Orleans that highlights re-building strategies, art, sustainable organizing strategies and champions the rich cultural fabric of both spaces.
Submit proposals for presenting teach-ins, conversations, dance/movement, films, panels, performances, skill-shares, caucuses, or a combination of some or all of these. Session proposals using media/digital justice tools or skills will be favored.
Email info@grisgrislab.com with questions about your proposal.
Proposals are due March 8, 2013 at midnight.
You may post comments or questions for the organizers on the (NO) Blank Slates discussion page on AMPtalk.
