For years, community radio advocates and activists have used the Allied Media Conference as an annual point of convergence in the movement to expand community radio access in the United States. The passage of the Local Community Radio Act in 2011 creates new potential for the issuance of non-commercial low-power FM (LPFM) radio licenses all across the country for non-profits and partnering community groups.
For the past few months, AMP has facilitated conversations on the possibility of a new community radio station in Detroit. We have been working with local radio activists who were inspired to explore the possibility of LPFM in Detroit after hearing about the opportunity at last year's AMC.
WDET 101.9FM, our local NPR station, recently produced an audio segment featuring Adriel Thornton of AMP, and local radio activist Ellen Schneider on the prospects for new community radio in Detroit.
Help us continue to build movement for community radio by joining the "Occupy the Airwaves! Community Radio" track at the 2012 Allied Media Conference. Register for the AMC today!
