Maps and data can be used to better understand where inequality exists, to look at possible correlations between environmental risk factors, or even to visualize community responses to social issues. Working within the framework of research justice, we will be using open source tools to learn about and work with maps and data. Our goal will be to successfully understand equitable data collection, data management, and basic map visualization techniques. Do you want to use maps and data to further your social justice cause? Then this is the course for you!

Instructor: Alex Hill

Alex was trained in social justice movement building by the Movement Strategy Center and has supported the efforts of numerous social justice oriented causes. He is currently a Project Coordinator at a Wayne State University research center and brings 5+ years of experience in GIS, mapping, and conducting research. Check out some of his work at DETROITography.

We will cover topics like file setup, using typography and color, manipulating images and creating halftones, and how to incorporate hand-drawn elements into your design. This workshop is for students with little to no Photoshop or Illustrator experience, but all students should be comfortable using a computer.
