Allied Media Projects is looking forward to participating in the sixth annual Detroit Design Festival, taking place September 21- 25th at venues throughout the city.
This year DDF events and programs will celebrate Detroit’s new designation as a UNESCO City of Design – the first city in the United States - and will explore the ways in which design is shaping Detroit’s future. AMP served on the advisory board which crafted the UNESCO application in collaboration with Detroit Creative Corridor Center. Throughout the application process, we uplifted our vision for the role design can play in fostering equitable development in Detroit.

Detroit City of Design Summit
This year’s Detroit Design Festival includes the Detroit City of Design Summit, September 22-23, presented by Detroit Creative Corridor Center and Creative Many Michigan. The two-day summit will convene local, national and international thought-leaders to kick off a year-long planning process to build a vision for Detroit City of Design. In addition to panel discussions, the summit will include a Detroit City of Design Tour and a hackathon.
AMP’s executive director Jeanette Lee will be speaking on the “Equity Panel” at 10:55 a.m. with Michael Ford, Peter D. Cummings, Esther Yang, and moderator Lauren Hood.
Lee’s presentation on the panel will explore themes of design and development in Detroit, and share information about the Community Benefits Ordinance that will be on Detroit’s November 8th general election ballot. Lee will also share principles of “design justice” that were developed this summer at the Allied Media Conference Design Justice Network Gathering, a convening of designers, organizers, and advocates who are committed to critical engagement with design for a social purpose.
In addition to AMP’s participation on the equity panel, AMP’s board members Garlin Gilchrist and Cezanne Charles will be participating on the “Sustainability Panel” and AMP’s design partners The Work Dept will be participating on the “Adaptation Panel.” Morgan Willis, Director of the Allied Media Conference, is a member of the Detroit City of Design Host Committee that helped organize the Detroit City of Design Summit.
The Detroit City of Design Summit is intended for design practitioners, community leaders, planners and policymakers, and anyone else who is passionate about utilizing design for good. The event will take place at The Jam Handy, 2900 E Grand Blvd. Registration fees are $75 for attending the panel conversations on day 1, and $105 for full participation in the two day event.
